TAMPA - Meagan Albright could see herself working in library administration, or perhaps with the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom.
But what she would really love to be is a librarian who works with young adults - which helps explain the teen-friendly book display she put together for Gay and Lesbian Pride Month at West Gate Regional Library in Town 'N Country, where she works part time.
"Suicide is the No. 1 leading cause of death for gay teens," she said. "I wanted to provide outreach to that particular segment of the population."
Albright, 24, a graduate student in library science at the University of South Florida, was astounded when her display led the Hillsborough County Commission to adopt a policy stating, in effect, that the county would not recognize gay pride, period.
"For the Board of County Commissioners, without very much discussion at all, to pass such negative legislation, I find it appalling," she said.
Albright, who is not gay, wants readers to find the books from her original display. Most authors and books have won significant awards. All are on library shelves.
